چکیده

[1] The reaction kinetics of submicron oleic (9-octadecanoic (Z)-) acid aerosols with ozone was studied using a novel aerosol mass spectrometric technique. In the apparatus a flow of size-selected aerosols is introduced into a flow reactor where the particles are exposed to a known density of ozone for a controlled period of time. The aerosol flow is then directed into an aerosol mass spectrometer for particle size and composition analyses. Data from these studies were used to: (a) quantitatively model the size-dependent kinetics process, (b) determine the aerosol size change due to uptake of ozone, (c) assess reaction stoichiometry, and (d) obtain qualitative information about the volatility of the reaction products. The reactive uptake probability for ozone on oleic acid particles obtained from modeling is 1.6 (± 0.2) 10 3 with an upper limit for the reactodiffusive length of 10 nm. Atmospheric implications of the results are discussed.

The oxidation of oleate in submicron aqueous salt aerosols: evidence of a surface process.

We have studied the oxidation of submicron aqueous aerosols consisting of internal mixtures of sodium oleate (oleic acid proxy), sodium dodecyl sulfate, and inorganic salts by O3, NO3/N2O5, and OH. Experiments were performed using an aerosol flow tube and a continuous flow photochemical reaction chamber coupled to a chemical ionization mass spectrometer (CIMS). The CIMS was fitted with a heated...

Kinetics of submicron oleic acid aerosols with ozone

Heterogeneous reactions involving particles and gas-phase species can alter important chemical and microphysical properties of aerosols, complicating modeling efforts to assess their effects on climate and human health. Organic aerosols are usually the most abundant component of fine aerosols (< 2 µm) after sulfates, and it is in this size range that one finds those aerosols responsible for the...

Kinetic multi-layer model of gas-particle interactions in aerosols and clouds (KM-GAP): linking condensation, evaporation and chemical reactions of organics, oxidants and water

We present a novel kinetic multi-layer model for gas-particle interactions in aerosols and clouds (KMGAP) that treats explicitly all steps of mass transport and chemical reaction of semi-volatile species partitioning between gas phase, particle surface and particle bulk. KMGAP is based on the PRA model framework (Pöschl-RudichAmmann, 2007), and it includes gas phase diffusion, reversible adsorp...

Evolution of submicron organic aerosol in polluted air exported from Tokyo

[1] Ground-based measurements of aerosols and trace gases were conducted at an urban site in Tokyo (Komaba) and a site 50 km to the north (Kisai) during July–August 2004. An Aerodyne aerosol mass spectrometer (AMS) was deployed at each measurement site to investigate the chemical evolution of submicron organic aerosol (OA) in polluted air. The mass concentrations of OA at the Kisai site were sy...

Importance of relative humidity in the oxidative ageing of organic aerosols: case study of the ozonolysis of maleic acid aerosol

Many important atmospheric aerosol processes depend on the chemical composition of the aerosol, e.g. water uptake and particle cloud interactions. Atmospheric ageing processes, such as oxidation reactions, significantly and continuously change the chemical composition of aerosol particles throughout their lifetime. These ageing processes are often poorly understood. In this study we utilize an ...
